Do reality tv shows ruin lives?

This was something I thought of whilst watching the apprentice on BBC and another contestant was ‘Fired’ . What will he do now? Can he get another job? Does the editing make him appear useless or is he actually? Is it his own fault for applying, does he know what he’s getting into?

The apprentice always seems to be like a business, slightly smoother version of Big Brother, another show which has ruined lives, whilst propelling others to stardom. Big Brother feels like watching a car crash, I barely watch any more as like Geordie Shore its pretty much all about who can have sex in the house first and how can scream and shout the loudest. It’s not real tv, not by any standards.

Towie, the ‘real’ housewives, Big Brother, I’m a ‘celebrity’ get me out of here (although that one is rather tame, and less focused on their personal lives), Gogglebox, Made in Chelsea and various others, all seem to focus on love lives, humiliation and making the underdog king!

Whilst some are a little kinder, some seem to use their editing to twist every word or life choice a character makes, whether good or bad.

Again, I understand that all of the people who star in these shows, know what they are getting into, they know they’ll either be Loved or hated, never an in between and with social media, there is no let up. Their lives become a persona an editing suite has helped to engineer.

Many children aspire to be a celebrity… Not talented, but famous. They don’t want to be good at something, they want to be Kim Kardashian, who got famous for essentially doing a porn film with her ex boyfriend. Then off the back of her came the entire family, which are loved and ridiculed in equal measure.

I post pictures on Instagram of me… If I got 200,000 negative comments or positive, I don’t know how I would even deal with it. Fame affects people in so many different ways.

I hope people who jump into reality shows know what they are getting into, know how they could be humiliated and realise that one show, could affect their entire lives, their families, their friends.

All that glitters is rarely gold.

  1. Most of it is just ‘Shock TV’ that started with shock advertising, and the fact that it works, and went on from there. We know it works because so many people watch it.

BTW… You do know that the majority of those shows are rigged, yes?

Personally I don’t watch TV anymore… It’s just not for me.

  2. Reality TV is a bit painful. When you have girls and guys on things like big brother taking as much off as legally possible to “showcase” their talents, it’s a pretty pathetic thing.

And things like I’m a Celebrity are mostly people desperate for additional fame.

  3. When I was younger I really wanted to be in Big Brother, it looked like fun, but I always thought I wasn’t interesting enough. So it doesn’t just affect the people who sign up. An old school friend was recently on The Bachelor and his mother ended up having to quit her job because of the abuse she received. Reality TV is a harsh world.
